The (Associate / Senior) Director of Immunology of Virus-Host Interactions is a scientist responsible for leading an interdisciplinary team performing R&D in support of Vector BioPharma’s viral vector engineering portfolio. The (Associate / Senior) Director is responsible for planning and conducting scientific research, developing, and leading his/her own team, and analyzing, interpreting, and communicating scientific results under the directives of the senior management. The (Associate / Senior) Director will focus on developing and advancing Vector BioPharma’s gene delivery platform with a focus on the assessment of mitigation strategies to reduce immunogenicity of adenovirus-based viral vectors for a variety of pharmaceutical applications. 

The ideal candidate will have advanced expertise in the assessment of viral-host interactions, adenovirus or other viral biology, gene therapy vectors and the immune responses mounted against them and be familiar with relevant mouse models in order to coordinate preclinical experiments with the preclinical team leader and with external contract research organizations (CROs). Experience in immuno-oncology and/or NHP models is also a plus. The (Associate / Senior) Director must possess excellent verbal and written scientific communication skills in the English language and have experience managing cross-functional collaborations within an organization and with external partners. She/he must have up-to-date knowledge of pertinent literature in the field of immunology, virology, gene therapy and biotechnology at large.


  • Leads a team of at least 2 research associates and scientists as direct reports on-site.
  • Manages and contributes to all duties related to scientific research conducted in the laboratory, including experimental study design, planning, execution, analysis, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Assumes responsibility as internal subject matter expert (SME) for all matters pertaining to the immunology of gene therapy vectors.
  • Participates and actively contributes to success of Vector Biopharma as a member of the leadership team.
  • Organizes and moderates team meetings for direct reports and is responsible for the collection and curation of scientific data for presentation to upper management.
  • Responsible for problem-solving and the development of innovative and pragmatic solutions to scientific and technical challenges encountered by research associates and scientists.
  • Manages the generation of new experimental procedures and assays, and the writing of technical reports and SOPs.
  • Coordinates or conducts hiring, training and support of research associates and scientists.
  • Manages multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Good communication and support internally (i.e., with team and senior management) and externally (i.e., with CROs, partners and collaborators).
  • Fosters an inclusive and supportive environment and promotes career development of direct reports.


  • PhD in biology, biochemistry, immunology or related fields or MD with 5 or more years of post-graduate or industry experience working in the fields of gene/cell therapy, immunology, virology, or related fields, or M.Sc. with 15 years or more relevant experience are also welcomed to apply.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a line manager of scientists with two or more direct reports.
  • Extensive experience with immunological and/or viral assay development, gene therapy vectors, mammalian cell culture including human primary cells, flow cytometry (including immunophenotyping), microscopy, molecular biology techniques or similar laboratory work.
  • Proficiency (e.g., C1 level) in both written and spoken English.
  • Must be highly collaborative, able to work in a fast-growing and highly diverse international team and thrive in a “start-up” environment.
  • Excellent scientific communication and presentation skills.
  • Good computer skills required (MS Office, Apple hardware). Experience with electronic lab notebook (ELN) such as Benchling, molecular biology software, data analysis software, or other laboratory software(s) is a plus.
